JCOM 2160 Reading Three

Nobody Knows You're a Dog
What more is there to say. On the internet you can be whatever you want or whomever you want to be. Basically this cartoon is saying it's easy to make up your own identity or maybe it is saying that who even cares who you are. You could be someone but there's so many "someones" it really doesn't matter. Ok, now I've just gone and confused myself on this comment.
Facebook:
"Facebook is changing the nature of relationships." I agree but only if we let it. Honestly the people I want to have real relationships with I stay in contact in other ways and spend time with them in other more "natural" ways. I do like facebook to catch up quickly with old friends that may have only been in my life for a short time but I still appreciated that time but if we don't get to see eachother that often I am ok.
Again, facebook can be intrusive if you let it be. If I post pictures I put them up because I want to share them; it would be stupid to put intimate and personal things up on something so public. People can be stupid in how they use the system but how it is used is entirely up to that person.
I honestly think it is silly when people see how many friends they can get on facebook. I laugh when people request to be my friend just because we went to highshool together but we never once spoke two words to each other. I never accept them. Like I said before; I use facebook to keep in contact with people who were actually part of my life.
"Talking is so last year" WHAT?! That is the problem with technology; we're forgetting the important basics of genuine relationships.

JCOM 2160 Reading Two

When Google is Not Your Friend
Honestly, I didn't even know this was a problem or I guess you could say I never realized the problem. Whenever I go to "google" myself it is never me who actually comes up on the search results... UNLESS I am VERY specific with my search. But I can see from this article, this could continue to grow into a problem.
Tug of War Over the Internet
All I have to say on this is, I like my options and if one day I have to choose between one web browser than another then I am going to very annoyed. These resources have always been accessible to us and to take it away and only give it back with a price is just... bleh! I may go to different websites for different reasons. For example; when grocery shopping here in Logan I go to Lee's Marketplace for my basic food items but when I may need other grocery shopping items such as paper towels, cleaning supplies, etc. then I may go to Walmart.

JCOM 2160: Assignment 1: Etiquette

Email Etiquette
Goodness, I can barley spell that: e-t-i-q-u-e-t-t-e… phew. Just reading the opening paragraph of this reading made me feel guilty. I immediately thought back to all of the emails I procrastinate answering because I may not know the answer or want to have more time to give a full-on reply or maybe I don’t want to seem like a looser that is constantly checking their email. AND THEN, forgetfulness kicks in or is it perfection wrapped up in avoidance. See, if it is an email to a friend it may be easy to write them back but for professional reasons; that is where I see now I have made some big mistakes just because I wanted the email to be just right and so I put it off. I agree with the article; it is important to remain professional when writing emails. It can be so easy to get into a slump and forget to consider grammar and format but I feel like if we get too comfortable then it could lead to an adverse effect on your original intent.
Rules of Netiquette
Ha, nice pun. I like Rule 2: Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life. It has always been interesting to be how easy it is for someone to be outgoing and pouring their life’s soul over instant messaging, text messaging, the internet, etc but when it comes to face-to-face circumstances they remember who they are and seem to abide by social norms. I think it’s important, especially when being professional, to remain professional at all times; even when not faced by the person you may be communicating with. Rule 5 also caught my eye, “Make yourself look good online.” At first this title seems funny and vain but when reading into the rule it makes sense. It is important to write well when on the internet because we are only human and we find mistakes so that we can improve upon ourselves and so you can really hurt yourself by writing poorly on the internet. Honestly, I’m not exactly the greatest writer and it scares me to death to post things on the web. But hey, practice is always good!

NEW REAL ESTATE COMPANY LOOKING FOR INVESTORS
ABC Real Estate: Equity-holding Beneficiary-directed Land Trusts

Logan, UT — ABC Real Estate, LLC is looking for investors to become involved in an equity-holding, beneficiary-directed land trust system.

“This is a trust system which will benefit many, including investors,” says Preston Parker, president.

Preston’s expertise was developed from Bill Gatten, a pioneer in the equity-holding land trust system in Utah. Today, Preston is seeking individuals that desire to learn the skills and to profit from the system.

Credit investment beneficiaries are used to help buyers, who do not have enough credit or enough for a down payment to buy a home. Investors will borrow money for a home; which is placed into a trust. Eventually, the home will be put in the buyer’s name.

ABC Real Estate was started in January 2008. The company works together with investors and those with good credit wanting to sell homes in creative ways. It currently has five employees and is located in Logan, Utah.

Investors interested in joining Parker’s team can contact him at 801-554-4567. For information on Bill Gatten and the equity-holding land trust system, visit www.landtrust.net.

Letter to Cousin; What is PR?

Amy Morris
1000 North 400 East
Logan, Utah 84321

Mr. Colby Broadbent
1314 Sandbags Drive
St. George, UT 84770

September 1, 2008

Dear Colby,

Hey cousin! How have you been since you last wrote me? How is school going for you? Are you surviving all of your classes? I can not believe your professor had your entire class write a nine page paper because one student fell asleep during his lecture. I wonder what he would do if someone sneezed. Have you decided what you will be majoring in? To answer your question from your last letter about what exactly is Public Relations and why I am majoring in it; I actually have quite the explanation for you.
Public Relations, also know as PR, manages the flow of information between an organization and its public. PR provides business and organizations a service by keeping the public and media informed of their works in order to create a better understanding of their company. Public Relation representatives work toward positive exposure for an individual or an organization; while also skillfully downplaying any negative exposure.
PR is leadership and organization that helps companies. It facilitates organizational change, communicates with relevant internal and external publics, creates consistency between an organizations goals and its expectations and it develops, executes and evaluates an organizations program.
Public Relation representatives form relationships with community leaders, the media, customers, investors, and government agencies. When dealing with these relationships PR reps must have the nature of being persuasive. Representatives must also have a strong knowledge of opinion, policy, attitudes, and social changes in their publics and society in general.
There are certain skills best to have when working in PR: communication skills; verbal and written, multitasking, excellent at time management and organizational and planning skills. It is also best to have some understanding of media background in order to understand how the media and advertising works.
Public relations involves a lot of writing and just like any profession writing is important. A public relations representative, Tim Brown, from the Richter7 PR agency said, “If you can write well, you can think well.” There is a lot of writing in PR; it involves: news releases, brochures, video scripts, strategic plans, presentations, speeches, press kits, newsletters, business letters, media pitches, etc.
Sometimes PR and marketing get confused as being the same thing. Although both have similarities in their widespread research, indentifying target publics, developing communication plans and supporting efforts to market goods and services. PR is different from marketing because it deals with internal publics, reputation or image building, external publics other than consumers, crisis management, public opinion, social issues and issue management.
A main key of PR is the ROPE system. ROPE; research, objectives, programming, and evaluation; is a series of steps used when conducting a project.
Research is a key part of being successful in PR; it is important because it helps you target who your target public is and the best way to address them. When doing research in Public Relations it is best to organize your findings into four areas: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT). By organizing your findings into these categories a PR representative is able to see the best way they may conduct a campaign or project. They can jump on their opportunities and get going with them and at the same time take note of their strengths and see if they can withstand their threats or do they need to take more reality consideration of their weaknesses. The SWOT analysis shows PR representatives where they can easily work and make things happen and where they can also take some risks.
Once research is completed; PR specialists take the information gathered and create objectives and goals for their projects and put them into action by completing the programming step of the ROPE process. Lastly, by beginning and ending every PR project with evaluation will help the PR agency or representative see where they can improve and/or what will work for their next project.
Now Colby, I know this was a lot of information but I hope it helps you out a little in understanding what public relations is. I hope you have a fabulous day and I will see you at Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,
Amy
